  • Light is very attractive in that it can be utilized for biosensing, bioimaging, and biomolecular manipulation. Biophotonics is the study of light interaction with biological matter and it is also recently regarded as the key science for the next generation of clinical tools and biomedical research instruments. This course teaches the fundamental principles of photonics and the contemporary applications on biophotonics. The weekly lecture will be designed that the fundamental study on photonics is directly connected with understanding contemporary applications on biophotonics. The lectures on photonics will cover the fundamentals of ray and wave optics, fiber optics, photonics, principles of laser, nanooptics, and photonic materials. The further studies on biophotonics will deal with microscopy techniques, biophotonic materials, photodynamic therapy, optical biosensors, bioimaging and nanobiophotonics.

    BiS573 Biophotonics course will be intended as introduction to biophotonics to provide a basic knowledge of a broad range of topics of this field, not as an in-depth and exhaustive treatise so that upper-level undergraduate and graduate students acquire the minimal necessary background for research and development. The students successfully followed-up will have more understanding research/technical articles related with cutting-edge biophotonic technology.

  • A study of fundamental physical, chemical, and engineering knowledge for bioengineering. Students will learn how basic scientific principles are used to engineer biological and medical systems in real world.
  • This is an introductory course of bioinformatics for upper level undergraduates providing one semester overview of the fields of bioinformatics and related subjects in biological science and technology. In this course, students will study how to analyze and interpret biological data to extract biological information. Topics consist of various computational methods and biological subjects introduced in bioinformatics field ranging from simple biomolecules such as DNA, RNA, and Protein to the deeper and complicated subjects such as genomes, proteomes, and integrated biological system. The class is also designed to encourage self-directed and problem-based learning through group discussions and TA guided student projects.
  • Physiology and Anatomy is a course designed to give students an introduction to the physiology and anatomy of the human body. This course will also cover the structure of biologic tissue, histology. This course provides students an opportunity to study the structure and functions of body organs. The student will learn how the body works, how to maintain its normal functions and the consequences of injury or disease. Clinical aspects and contemporary bioengineering application will also be introduced.
  • - Explores a wide spectrum of researches and applications of biotechnology.

    - Focuses on how advances in biotechnology impact our daily life especially with regard to health and medicine.

    - Covers different fields of traditional biotechnology and its development into systems biotechnology with the advent of high-throughput technologies, bioinformatics, and genomics.
